The Price of Freedom is the fourth episode of Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. Written by Doug Booth, it was released on November 9, 1987.
Synopsis[]
The citizens of Khemir are having dificulty adapting to the new Age of Magic without the use of their Robot Slaves. One of the Khemerites befriends the Darkling Lords, who hatch a plot to capture the Spectral Knights and rob them of their magical powers and force them to work for the Khemerites.
Plot[]
During the Age of Technology, the citizens of Khemir relied on robots to do all the work in the city, believing themselves to be above manual labour. Despite the changed conditions on Prysmos, most of the Khemirites still hold this attitude and, when Darkstorm learns of this, he decides to use it to his advantage.
The Khemirites seek sanctuary in New Valarak. But, that night, they steal the Spectral Knights' Power Staffs and admit the Darkling Lords into the city. Though the Spectral Knights put up a brave fight, they are quickly conquered, stripped of their Totem powers and forced to become the slaves of the Khemirites. When Arzon and Feryl return from a patrol (several hours late - they clashed with the Darkling Lords just outside Khemir and the Capture Chariot was badly damaged as a result) Leoric tries to warn them away, only for Feryl to be captured.
Arzon remains free, until he overhears Darkstorm threatening to have his fellow Spectral Knights sent to the Vanadium Mines if he doesn't surrender. Realising he cannot sacrifice his friends for the sake of his own freedom, he turns himself in. However, a Khemirite woman named Marna proves to be an ally. She has already tried, unsuccessfully, to persuade her people to change their way of life and Arzon has helped her to understand that freedom at the expense of others is wrong. So she frees the Spectral Knights and persuades fellow Khemirite Belizar to help them regain their Totems.
During the battle to drive the Darkling Lords out of New Valarak, the Khemirites' leader, Orzan, is bitten by Cravex's Spider of Fear and has visions of his people's robots turning on him. When he comes to his senses, by which time the Darkling Lords are retreating, he realises that he was afraid of being enslaved himself and renounces slavery forever.
