The Overthrow of Merklynn is the seventh episode of Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light. Written by Flint Dille, it was released on October 26, 1987.
Synopsis[]
Tired of constantly having to answer to Merklynn, Darkstorm deposes the wizard and seizes control of Iron Mountain. But he quickly becomes overconfident and unleashes a spell which trigger a series of violent cataclysms. Believing that Prysmos will be destroyed unless the spell can be broken, the Darkling Lords are forced to seek out Merklynn and free him from The Wizards Gaol to which Darkstorm banished him.
Plot[]
Darkstorm decides to use Falkama (who has been imprisoned in the dungeons at the Dark Domain since his capture) in a plot to depose Merklynn. With Falkama's help, the Darkling Lords obtain a spell book called the Omnipitocron and a sprig of Wizard's Bane. They then deliberately allow themselves to be captured by the Spectral Knights, knowing this will draw Merklynn out of his Shrine.
When Merklynn comes to free the Darkling Lords, Darkstorm uses the Wizard's Bane to immobilise him and Falkama (for whom he has no further use) before sending both wizards to The Wizards Gaol. He then uses a spell from the Omnipitocron to transport himself to Merklynn's Shrine, turning the Spectral Knights into statues before they can stop the other Darkling Lords from following him. At the Shrine, Darkstorm learns that Virulina, Reekon and Lexor feel that he has cheated them; he casts spells on each of them, before turning them into statues. Darkstorm then shows his remaining followers how he plans to reward their loyalty.
But, in his arrogance, Darkstorm summons the Sacred Secret Spell, triggering a series of violent cataclysms. Believing Prysmos will be destroyed unless the Spell is broken, the Darkling Lords (including Virulina, Reekon and Lexor, who have reverted to normal) race to the Wizards Gaol to free Merklynn. Just as they reach the Wizards Gaol, a tidal wave engulfs them, forcing Virulina to use her Shark Totem to save Darkstorm. Inside, Merklynn tells Darkstorm that any mortal who tries to steal magic from wizards and use it to cause destruction will be compelled to return the orb they stole to its rightful owner, adding that the Darkling Lords can expect no more favours from him.
The destruction caused by the Sacred Secret Spell then goes into reverse, restoring Prysmos to how it was before Darkstorm stole Merklynn's magic. However, some of the other wizards who were imprisoned in the Wizards Gaol have escaped and are now at large.
